Ms. Elyse Emerich
Piano Instructor, Accompanist
Hello! My name is Elyse Emerich and I have been teaching piano for over 15 years. Nothing makes me happier than helping another person learn to play piano and understand music. I enjoy teaching students of all ages and ability levels. I think learning to play music is inherently fun, but even more fun when learning familiar songs and pieces- which is why I like to teach a variety of musical styles such as classical, jazz, and popular music. I also enjoy helping people learn the fundamentals of music theory, so they can apply them at the piano and create their own music through composition and improvisation.
Originally from Flower Mound, Texas, Elyse Emerich earned her Bachelors of Music Degree in Piano Pedagogy from the University of Oklahoma in 2012, where she studied under Dr. Ed Gates, Dr. Barbara Fast and Dr. Jane Magrath. While at OU, she received special recognition for her research paper and presentation, "Pastoral Scenes in Beethoven's 15th Piano Sonata". Elyse then studied with Harold Martina and Dr. Ann Gipson at Texas Christian University, where she graduated with Honors in 2014 and received her Masters of Music degree in Piano Pedagogy. In 2012, Elyse traveled to Eisenstadt, Austria, to participate in the Classical Music Festival, where she performed in the Haydnsaal at the musically historic Esterházy Palace.
Elyse's teaching experiences are not limited to private piano lessons; she has also taught a variety of group classes for children and adults. During her time at TCU, she instructed an adult "Piano for Pleasure" course for five years as part of the Extended Education program, as well as children's classes through TCU's Pedagogy Laboratory Program and Early Childhood Music. She also enjoyed teaching a group piano class at a Fort Worth ISD elementary school for an outreach program supported by the Cliburn Foundation.
Having a second musical passion for keyboard percussion instruments, Elyse has performed and taught for many competitive marching music ensembles. She played vibraphone as a member of the Phantom Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps from 2008-2010, winning the Drum Corps International World Championship in 2008 and earning the Fred Sanford High Percussion award in both 2008 and 2010. She also performed at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention numerous times between 2006-2012 as part of percussion ensembles, both as featured clinic artists and award-winning competitive marching music ensembles. More recently, she spent five summers instructing the front ensemble at the Oregon Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps.
Elyse is a member of Music Teachers National Association and has instructed private piano students of all ages and ability levels, teaching for independent music and performance studios in both Texas and Oklahoma. Prior to relocating to Virginia in 2017, Elyse maintained a full piano studio through Texas Christian University's Music Preparatory Division in Fort Worth, Texas. She now enjoys playing piano for services at the Church of St. Therese in Gloucester, and teaching out of her home studio. in Newport News. Elyse currently lives with her fiancé, their her two cats- Maebe and Mila, and their dog- Turtle.
